Located in an urban area of São Paulo, the Alberto Löfgren State Park, known as Horto Florestal, is a Conservation Unit and has 73.9 ha of areas open to public visitation. It houses a rich biodiversity of fauna and flora in the midst of preserved Atlantic forest remnants. The Park was created with the expropriation of Engenho Pedra Branca and the installation of a Botanical Garden, in 1896, for research on tree species and the production of fast-growing seedlings to recover the state's forest cover. Adjacent to Parque da Cantareira, the Park contributes to the maintenance of the vegetation corridor that makes up the Serra da Cantareira and the Green Belt of the City of São Paulo, being an important park with an urban bias and one of the most visited in Brazil. In 1963, Horto Florestal received the status of State Park and, in 1983, the entire area was listed by CONDEPHAAT.
